Anil Cherian

Anil Cherian is a medical doctor and a graduate of the Christian Medical College in Vellore. He specialised in Paediatrics and public health, with additional training in health economics. For over 20 years, he and his wife, Shalini, served in rural North India at several mission hospitals affiliated with the Emmanuel Hospital Association. While he was the Director of Community Health at EHA, he relocated to Africa in 2014 at the request of ICMDA to serve as a pioneering medical missionary in South Sudan. Shalini and he lived and worked in Uganda and South Sudan for over 10 years, establishing a Christian health training institute for students from South Sudan in Kampala from 2014 to 2018 (five years). They moved to Bor Town in South Sudan in 2019, where they ran the Jonglei Health Sciences Institute until July 2024. Over the decade, they trained more than 140 health workers. They not only shared their medical skills but also discipled many of these students, teaching them about the Christian faith. In 2024, Shalini and Anil returned to India. However, they continue to support various mission projects in South Sudan, the Nuba Mountains in Sudan, Zimbabwe, and Tanzania. Anil is the recipient of the ICMDA Dignity and Right to Health Award in 2016.
