This guide provides all the necessary information to help you plan your visit to Jeju for ICMDA 2026.

1. Visa & Entry

A. K-ETA (Korea Electronic Travel Authorization)

Nationals of countries eligible for visa-free entry to Korea must obtain a K-ETA before departure. Once issued, a K-ETA is valid for two years.

B. Visa

If you are not from a K-ETA eligible country, you must apply for a short-term visitor visa (C-3-1) at the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in your country of residence. The visa process requires ample time, so we recommend starting your application at least 2-3 months in advance.

Important: Visa policies are subject to change. Please check the official websites for the latest information before planning your trip.

C. Advisory for Travelers Visiting Jeju Island under the Visa-Free Entry Program

To ensure a smooth and enjoyable visit to Jeju Island, travelers entering the Republic of Korea under the Jeju Visa-Free Entry Program are advised to carefully review the following information before departure.

  1. Purpose of Entry

Entry under the Jeju Visa-Free Entry Program is permitted strictly for short-term tourism purposes.

Please note that admission to the Republic of Korea is determined solely by immigration authorities at Jeju International Airport in accordance with Korean immigration laws and regulations. Participation in the visa-free program does not guarantee entry.

  1. Documents to Carry

All travelers are strongly advised to carry printed copies of the following documents (not solely electronic versions):

  • Confirmed round-trip or onward air ticket
  • Hotel reservation(s) covering the entire stay
  • Detailed travel itinerary
  • Proof of sufficient financial means (e.g., recent bank statements, international credit cards, or foreign exchange records)
  • Passport valid for at least six months from the date of entry
  • Travel insurance (strongly recommended)
  • Contact details of accommodation providers

Travelers should be prepared to clearly explain their travel plans and arrangements if requested by immigration authorities.

  1. Financial Preparedness

Visitors should be able to demonstrate sufficient financial resources to cover accommodation, transportation, meals, and other expenses during their stay.

Immigration officers may ask questions regarding travel plans and financial arrangements. Responses should be consistent with the stated purpose of tourism.

  1. Immigration Inspection upon Arrival

Upon arrival, travelers may be subject to an immigration interview.

Visitors are encouraged to:

  • Answer all questions clearly, truthfully, and consistently.
  • Remain calm and cooperative.
  • Be familiar with their itinerary, accommodation details, and return travel arrangements.

Failure to satisfy immigration requirements may result in denial of entry.

  1. Conditions of the Jeju Visa-Free Program

Travelers should fully understand the conditions of the visa-free entry program.

Please note that:

  • The Jeju Visa-Free Entry Program does not permit travel to mainland Korea without an appropriate visa.
  • Attempting to enter mainland Korea without the required visa authorization may violate Korean immigration regulations.
  • Overstaying or engaging in unauthorized activities may result in penalties, deportation, or future travel restrictions.
  1. In the Event of Entry Refusal

If entry is denied, travelers may be required to return on the next available flight operated by the airline through which they arrived.

Depending on flight schedules and operational circumstances, a temporary stay in a designated holding facility may be required until departure.

  1. Consular Assistance

Travelers are advised that decisions regarding admission to the Republic of Korea are made exclusively by Korean immigration authorities and cannot be overturned by embassies or consulates.

In the event of detention pending return travel, travelers may contact their respective embassy or consulate for consular assistance, subject to local regulations and procedures.

We encourage all visitors to prepare thoroughly before travel and to comply with all immigration requirements to ensure a pleasant and trouble-free visit to Jeju Island.

4. Health & Safety

A. In Case of Emergency

For any medical emergency, dial 119 immediately. This is the unified number for ambulance, fire, and rescue services, and it offers foreign language interpretation. We recommend keeping your hotel or venue address written in both English and Korean.

B. Hospitals & Pharmacies

  • Hospitals: For non-emergency care, you can visit a local hospital or clinic. For assistance, ask your hotel concierge to recommend a nearby facility appropriate for foreign visitors.
  • Pharmacies: You can purchase over-the-counter medicine at pharmacies marked with a "약" (Yak) sign. A doctor's prescription is required for controlled medications.

C. Infectious Disease Prevention

We recommend practicing basic personal hygiene (hand washing, etc.). For the latest information, please check the official KDCA website.

D. Travel Insurance

We strongly recommend that all participants purchase travel insurance to cover any unforeseen medical situations.

E. Drinking Water & Food

While tap water in Korea is safe to drink, most people prefer bottled water, which is widely available. You can enjoy a wide variety of food with utmost confidence, as hygiene standards in restaurants are very high.

5. Currency & Banking

  • Currency: South Korean Won (KRW, ₩)
  • Payment: Credit cards (Visa, Mastercard) are widely accepted. However, some cash may be needed for traditional markets or small vendors.
  • Exchange/ATMs: You can exchange currency at airports and city banks (passport required). You can withdraw cash from "Global" ATMs using an international card.
  • Banking Hours: Typically 09:00 - 16:00 on weekdays (closed on weekends and public holidays).
  • Tax Refund: Foreign tourists can receive a VAT refund for purchases over a certain amount at "Tax Free" stores. You can process the refund at the airport upon departure.

6. Electricity & Communication

A. Electricity & Adapters

  • Voltage: 220V, 60Hz
  • Plug Type: Type F (two round pins)

Most visitors will need a travel adapter to fit the outlets.

B. Communication

Staying connected is easy in tech-savvy South Korea.

7. What to Pack

The conference period in late June and early July marks the beginning of Jeju's hot and humid summer, which often coincides with the "Jangma" (rainy season).

Recommended Clothing

  • Casual Wear: Lightweight, breathable clothing (e.g., cotton, linen), a light waterproof jacket, and water-resistant sandals.
  • For the Conference: Indoor venues are often heavily air-conditioned, so a light cardigan or blazer is essential.

Essential Items Checklist

  • Small, foldable umbrella
  • Sun protection (sunscreen, sunglasses, hat)
  • Portable fan and mosquito repellent
  • Waterproof bag or pouch (to protect electronics)
